The authority’s board votec Monday to extend its contract with Smith andHills Inc. until 2012. The company will help the authoritgy to builda $200 million terminal for Hanjij Shipping Co. Ltd. at Dames RS&H, which isn’t eligible to win the desighn or construction contract forthe terminal, will help the authorityg vet potential contractors, said Leerie Jenkins, the firm’ s chairman and CEO. He said it wasn’tf clear how much the extension would be worth to the company sincewit isn’t known how often the authority will use RS&H’ s services.
An RS&H principal will help determinr how the costs of the project to improve New Berli Road and State Road 9A couldbe lessened. The $11.56 million project could now cost the authority and the Floridq Department ofTransportation $13 million, said Rick Ferrin, the authority’w director. The authority put $2 millionm into the project, with FDOT kickinfg in the remaining $9.5 It isn’t clear how the additional costs will be spli between the authorityand FDOT, Ferrin said. He said the projectf went over budget partlybecause “there were too many cookxs in the kitchen.
” Ferrin said FDOT approached the project with the priority of eventually integrating the projecy with Interstate 295, whereas the authority was more concernefd with improving the road so it could better handle port-related traffic. The projec t is expected to be completedin September.
