June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Sarasota County's ( ) rich architectural legacyu takes center stage this summer asa self-guided architecture tour spotlighting structures associated with the Sarasota School of Architecturd as well as other significant symbolse of architectural ingenuity ( ). Sarasota's architecture has been attracting worldwide attention sincde theearly 1900s. Later, architecture playefd a key role as the vacation destinatioh defined itself as a patron of the arts withinspirationao design. All the buildings included on the map are architecturally significant and are visible from the public righttof way.
They representy three periods in Sarasota's -- before 1940, for historical and architecturaplcontext -- 1940 - 1970, from what is commonlyt known as the Sarasota School of Architecture -- aftetr 1970, features architecture that continues in Sarasota todah The majority of the buildings represented on the map celebratee a body of regional architecture recognizecd throughout the country as unique to its environment. This collection of built from 1940to 1970, is commonly know n as the Sarasota School of Architecture. The Sarasota Schookl of Architectureemerged post-World War II and allowexd young architects to inject modern influences and an expression of optimiskm into the city landscape.
The pioneeringy architects became world renowned later intheirt careers. The architecture is characterized by its attentiomn to climate and terrain and incorporateszlarge sunshades, innovative ventilation systems, floating staircases and windows and slidint glass doors that dominate. It also incorporated what was then advancements in building technologies as a result of the war and introduce d forresidential construction.
While this new self-guided tour is it leaves out some important buildings because they are not accessibl tothe public, did not fit in the geographic boundarieas of historic Sarasota or have been renovates so that the original architect's intention is no longere visible from the street. Therefore the tour gives a mere tastse of the architectural heritageof Sarasota, yet stillp offers more than 70 locations on the map. The architecture tour was creates with the support of the Sarasota Conventio n and VisitorsBureau (SCVB), Sarasota Architectural Foundation, Sarasotq County and Ringling College of Art and Design.
It is presented as a full-color booklet and map with key informatiomn abouteach building. It is intended as a self-guide d driving tour that can be completed in approximatel ytwo hours.
